What unemployment benefits will there be in 2024 and when do they come into effect?

Almost two weeks ago, the new unemployment benefits were approved, which will come into effect in a few months, on June 1, 2024. If at that time you exhaust your unemployment benefits and cannot find work, or if you have not contributed enough to collect it , find out about the latest developments in the approved regulations.

The unemployment benefit reform is based on European Recovery and Resilience Plan and is expected to benefit some 800,000 people. The regulation that shapes this change is the Royal Decree-Law on simplification and improvement of the level of assistance of unemployment protection within the framework of Reform 10, of Component 23: new public policies for a dynamic, resilient and inclusive.

Main new features of unemployment benefits will come into force in 2024

The first thing you have to keep in mind is that all the new developments will apply to the subsidies that are granted once the regulations come into force, no to current subsidies. If you are currently receiving a subsidy, you will maintain the rights associated with it until it expires, without changing any conditions.

Let’s go with the news: one of them is that they have reduced to three types of subsidy. As of its entry into force, these will be the three cases that will be addressed:

  • Subsidy for exhaustion of unemployment benefit.
  • Subsidy for insufficient contributions that do not allow access to collect unemployment.
  • Subsidy for those over 52 years of age.

Another novelty is that the waiting month is eliminated between the last month in which unemployment is collected and the first month in which the subsidy is collected. With the new subsidies you will not have a coverage gap of one month, as is the case with the previous ones.

Furthermore, you will be able make the collection of the subsidy compatible with having an employed job, whether part-time or full-time and without reducing the amount of the subsidy. This compatibility is maintained for six months. In this way, you will be able to accept occasional jobs without fear of having your subsidy withdrawn for it.

  • You continue to collect 90% of the IPREM (currently, 540 euros). For another six months.

Various changes have also been introduced in the requirements to collect unemployment benefits:

  • The beneficiaries will be: people who have contributed less than 6 months and who do not have family responsibilities. Today these people are required to have contributed for at least 6 months (and 3 months if they have family responsibilities).
  • Unemployed people may benefit from the subsidy under 45 years of age without family responsibilitieswhich until now they could not.
