Check Out the Specs on BenQ’s HT4550i 4K 4LED Home Theater Projector

Manufacturers of some of the best-selling home theater projectors, BenQ just unveiled the details of its latest 4K home theater projector, HT4550i ($2999). Long throw front projection unit supports full 4K Ultra HD resolution, HDR10+ and HDR Pro processing to get the most out of 4K content on Ultra HD Blu-ray and streaming services. It uses Texas Instruments’ DLP technology to create an image, combined with LED backlighting for increased brightness, improved energy efficiency, and longer life.

The HT4550i 4K home theater projector is equipped with a bright 4-element LED lamp (4LED) that delivers a maximum brightness of up to 3200 ANSI lumens. By using separate lighting elements for each of the primary colors (red, green and blue), the projector does not need a color wheel. This should minimize the RBE (rainbow effect) present on some DLP based projectors. The 4LED lighting unit is expected to last at least 20,000 hours in normal viewing or up to 30,000 hours in economy mode.

BenQ claims that the projector can reproduce 100% of the DCI-P3 color spectrum, which is certainly an impressive feat. In addition to HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) HDR, the HT4550i is one of the first projectors we’ve seen to support HDR10+, an extended form of HDR (High Dynamic Range) that uses dynamic metadata to adjust the image on stage. on a scenario basis. HDR10+ content is available on Ultra HD Blu-ray as well as select streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV+, Paramount+ and Hulu.

The projector also boasts improved tone mapping. Effective HDR tone mapping is extremely important for a projector as most projectors cannot approach the maximum brightness of a flat panel LED/LCD or OLED TV. With BenQ’s HDR-Pro processing, the projector can adjust the brightness scale to display incoming brightness values in content according to the actual brightness capabilities of the projector. This can help preserve fine detail in both the brightest and darkest scenes and everywhere in between. Good HDR tone mapping prevents black distortion and loss of bright highlights.

Perfect for home theater… and already calibrated!

The high brightness of the HT4550i means it can be used in a living room, but BenQ recommends using it in a dimmable home theater room for maximum performance. The projector offers a 1.3x zoom lens as well as horizontal and vertical lens shift for flexible placement options. For those who don’t want to mess around with calibration, BenQ does it at the factory for every single unit. Each projector comes with its own calibration report to guarantee 100% Rec.709 Delta E<3 and full grayscale tracking within Delta E<2 with an optimized Rec.709 colormap for true Hollywood colors. Of course, for calibration to mean anything, you’ll need to pair with the same screen that BenQ used, but at least you know the particular device you’re buying is up to factory specifications.

The key is controlled by the projector’s remote control. It also includes two HDCP 2.2 compliant HDMI ports, one of which supports eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) for uncompressed multi-channel audio. The device also supports 3D content if you add a pair or two additional DGD5 active 3D glasses (or third-party DLP-Link compatible 3D glasses).
